I cannot open iTunes on macbook pro

Hi, I need help with my macbook pro. My son has been using it recently for youtube etc but since then I cannot open up iTunes at all. It tries to open within the bottom dock but then just disappears. If i put a cd in the drive it will not play either through iTunes. Does it look like there is something blocking the app, and if so can is there a factory reset facility?
